Q + A
Do I need to get Mexican car insurance?
Yes, there are a few ways to get insurance. If you are a AAA member you can get it online through AAA Mexican car insurance. Or you can try one of these online services. www.bajabound.com
Do I need a passport?
Yes, you must bring your passport, sentri pass or global goes card to enter back into the US. This includes children!
When is the ideal time to arrive at the border?
If you are planning on arriving on Friday we recommend you arrive around before 1pm to avoid long border waits.
How much money should I bring and should I bring cash?
You can notify your bank to let them know you are traveling to use your debit card or credit card. We like to bring cash to be on the safe side. Smaller bills are ideal at the tolls which would be used if you are driving on the toll road. You may find yourself going through 2 tolls to get there and 1 toll back. Right now they are approx. $2.50
Should I pack food and water?
Most homes in Las Gaviotas do not have filtered water so we recommend bringing your own water. You can also purchase this at the local store which can be found under "Things to do". We will be providing a lot of food during the events on Friday and Saturday afternoon. There is also typically a taco vendor at the pool that is very yummy! Ideally you would pack lunch items, drinks and snacks for a couple of days.
How long is the border wait typically?
With a sentri or global entry the wait is typically under an hour. We typically return going through Otay because it's the easiest way to access sentri or global. You can purchase a medical pass at a pharmacy in Primo Tapia at Farmacia Ortiz, which would allow you to access a faster lane going vs general public. If you are returning as the general public wait times can be 2-4 hours depending on what time you leave. We recommend the earlier the better!
